Preparatory steps, funding sources, objectives, strategy, and actual progress were reported. IIS STEI will link all cooperating information centers and libraries in the sector, enabling the sharing and exchange of information, and, for users, access to the library holdings of all institutions. Prospectively, the IIS STEI database will be accessible via Internet. ISTIA is already a member of SANET (Slovak part of the Internet). The project is a cooperative initiative bringing together decision-makers who allocate funds, the software know-how of the CEIT private company developers, and expertise of librarians and documentalists of participating institutions. Funds allocated to the project brought to the cooperating institutes the financial means to buy computers.
